Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a form of assisted conception. IUI is also sometimes referred to as artificial insemination (AI). The procedure involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus during the ovulation period. Prior to the procedure, semen collected are washed to separate the sperm from the semen.
IUI is a less invasive treatment option and this procedure is generally recommended as a starting point for couples. However, not everyone makes a suitable candidate for IUI. Medical conditions such as blocked fallopian tubes, severe endometriosis and severe male infertility will affect the chances of conceiving via IUI. Not to worry, there are various other suitable fertility treatment options that are available at Sunway Fertility Centre if you’ve been diagnosed with the mentioned medical conditions.
After consulting our fertility specialist, you and your partner will have a better idea if IUI is a suitable treatment option for you.
Who can benefit from IUI ?
- The couple is unable to have sex due to an injury, disability or a medical condition such as premature ejaculation.
- The husband has HIV, as sperm washing can reduce the risk of passing on the HIV virus to baby.
- The couple have been diagnosed with unexplained fertility.
